eisui

Sacred Earth Painting
Statement

eisui reinterprets the Buddhist concept of nirvana not as religious salvation or a posthumous state, but as a structure of the world that can be perceived while living.

Her practice originates in personal experiences of life and death, yet it does not remain within the realm of private narrative. Instead, it opens toward a vision of the world as a field of interdependence, where all beings reflect one another. In this relational world, difference is not erased; rather, harmony emerges precisely because difference exists.

eisui works with materials historically associated with prayer and belief—earth pigments, metal leaf, and lacquer—reconstructing them through a contemporary approach to painting. Her distinctive tsuchisai-ga (Sacred Earth Painting) technique does not seek to illuminate the surface from without, but to allow light to sediment within the work itself. Each piece exists simultaneously as an image and as a trace of time and accumulated action.

Motifs such as shippo patterns and the concept of Indra’s Net function not as decorative elements, but as visual metaphors for a world constituted by innumerable relationships. Rather than illustrating specific religious doctrines, these structures invite viewers to situate themselves within networks of connection and resonance.

Living and working in close proximity to nature in Japan’s mountainous regions, eisui approaches artistic practice as inseparable from the act of living itself. Rooted in Eastern philosophy, her work nonetheless addresses questions that resonate universally in a contemporary world marked by division and conflict.

eisui’s works do not propose definitive answers. Instead, they gently offer alternative ways of perceiving the world—perspectives that quietly transcend boundaries of individual experience, culture, and belief, and open toward shared understanding.
