Art on Paper New York 2025
Light and Shadow
Japanese art, profoundly intertwined with mythology and spiritual belief, has cultivated a distinctive aesthetic tradition spanning more than a millennium. The sensibility of this island nation —revering the transitions of the seasons and harmony with the natural world—has been carried forward across generations, ultimately giving rise to contemporary cultural expressions such as anime and manga. These have in turn evolved into what is now celebrated globally as “Japan Culture.” Yet within the international art market, the presence of contemporary Japanese art remains comparatively restrained, and its essential depth of philosophy and beauty has yet to be fully conveyed.
Among the many defining characteristics of Japanese art, the aesthetics of shadow occupies a central position. The interplay of light and darkness has long shaped the Japanese imagination, never reduced to mere obscurity, but instead regarded as a realm in which subtle beauty and profound depth emerge.
Shadow not only reveals the essence of form but also imparts a sense of stillness and emotional resonance. It is within this space of shadow that the inner landscapes of Japan continue to breathe.
Today, we stand at a pivotal moment, returning to the very foundations of Japanese art in order to reconsider both its history and its future trajectory. By foregrounding the diversity and expressive force of individual artists, while simultaneously crafting a cohesive and balanced exhibition environment, we seek to articulate new possibilities for Japanese art. Rooted in the aesthetics of shadow, this exhibition invites viewers into visual experiences born of the dialogue between light and darkness, presenting the profound resonance of Japanese aesthetics from New York—a city where harmony and chaos coalesce—toward the wider world.
